Event Brief Description
The Legal Aid Clinic, Pro Bono Club, and Prison Research Cell of Galgotias University organized a successful book donation drive titled 'Books Beyond Bars: Kitabein, Nayi Soch' from 6th to 21st April 2025. The drive culminated on World Book Day, 23rd April, with a visit to District Jail, Kasna. The event aimed to promote literacy, education, and rehabilitation by establishing a library within the prison.
Around 250 books were collected, including fiction, non-fiction, legal, motivational, and educational material in Hindi and English. The Legal Aid Cell team, including 36 student and 3 members and faculty, visited the jail and interacted with inmates, observing ongoing rehabilitation programs like stitching, singing, hair cutting, and computer training.
The initiative received heartfelt appreciation from the jail authorities, who provided a signed and stamped letter acknowledging the donation.
Event Detailed Description
The 'Books Beyond Bars: Kitabein, Nayi Soch' initiative was launched by Galgotias University's Legal Aid Cell, Pro Bono Club, and Prison Research Cell to enhance rehabilitation through reading. The event was actively promoted on campus, with collection points set up across departments. Students, faculty, and external contributors, including the Aruna Mithlesh Foundation, donated generously.
On 23rd April 2025, a 30-member delegation visited District Jail, Kasna. The group engaged with inmates, prison staff, and rehabilitation officers. They toured various skill development programs including tailoring, music, hair styling, and digital literacy. The students also discussed the importance of education in prison reform.’
Books collected were formally handed over during the visit. Jail authorities expressed gratitude and provided an official acknowledgment. The visit was eye-opening for students and helped sensitize them to the realities of incarceration and the transformative power of education.
