Industrial Visit to Okhla Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), New Delhi
Event Date: 8th May 2026
Event brief description: The Department of Civil Engineering, Galgotias Polytechnic, organized an industrial visit to the Okhla Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), New Delhi, in association with Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The visit aimed to provide Diploma in Civil Engineering students with practical exposure to wastewater treatment systems and environmental engineering practices. Students gained firsthand knowledge about the functioning, importance, and treatment processes of one of Asia’s largest sewage treatment plants. The session was guided by Mr. Alok Kumar Sinha, Senior Engineer, and Mr. Narender Kumar, Engineer, who explained the complete sewage treatment mechanism and demonstrated the practical operations of the plant.
Event Detailed Description:
The primary objective of the industrial visit was to provide students with practical knowledge of sewage treatment processes and wastewater management systems. The visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom concepts and real-world industrial applications in environmental and civil engineering. The students of Diploma in Civil Engineering visited the Okhla Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), one of Asia’s largest sewage treatment facilities, where they observed the functioning of various treatment units and modern wastewater management practices. During the visit, Mr. Alok Kumar Sinha, Senior Engineer, and Mr. Narender Kumar, Engineer, provided detailed insights into the significance of sewage treatment plants in environmental protection, public health, and sustainable water management. They explained how untreated wastewater is processed through different stages before being safely discharged or reused.
The students were introduced to various stages of treatment including:
- Preliminary Treatment
- Screening and Grit Removal
- Sedimentation Process
- Aeration and Biological Treatment
- Sludge Treatment and Disposal
- Final Water Purification Process
A major highlight of the visit was the practical demonstration of plant operations. Students observed the real-time functioning of machinery, tanks, pipelines, aeration systems, and control units used in the sewage treatment process. The visit enabled students to understand the practical implementation of environmental engineering concepts and wastewater treatment technologies. Students actively interacted with the engineers and clarified their doubts regarding plant capacity, operational challenges, treatment efficiency, and sustainability practices. The session was highly interactive and informative, helping students gain technical awareness and industry-oriented knowledge. The industrial visit proved to be highly educational and enriching for the students. It enhanced their understanding of sewage treatment systems, environmental sustainability, and practical civil engineering applications. The Department of Civil Engineering expressed sincere gratitude to Delhi Jal Board and the officials of Okhla STP for their guidance, support, and valuable learning experience provided to the students.
