Interactive Awareness Session: Focus on HPV, Lifestyle Risks & Early Cancer Diagnosis

As a fitting conclusion to the day-long health camp, an interactive awareness session was organized in the auditorium, led by senior oncologists from the Oncology Department of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC). The session drew a large audience comprising students, faculty members, and healthcare professionals.

The key theme of the session centered on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and its strong link with various cancers, particularly cervical cancer, which remains a leading cause of mortality among women in India despite being largely preventable.

Key Highlights of the Session:

  • Understanding HPV and its Transmission:
The speakers provided a clear and concise explanation of HPV, its various strains, and how it is transmitted. They emphasized that HPV is one of the most common viral infections globally and that persistent infection with high-risk types can lead to cervical, oropharyngeal, and other cancers.
  • HPV Vaccination:
The oncologists strongly advocated for early vaccination, especially among adolescents, to significantly reduce the risk of HPV-related cancers. They highlighted that both males and females can benefit from the vaccine, and clarified common myths and misconceptions around its safety and efficacy.
  • Modern Lifestyle and Cancer Risk:
The session also covered modifiable lifestyle factors that increase cancer risk, such as:
    • Poor dietary habits
    • Sedentary lifestyle
    • Smoking and alcohol consumption
    • Stress and lack of sleep
    • Exposure to environmental toxins and pollutants

The doctors urged participants to adopt healthier habits and engage in regular physical activity to lower their long-term cancer risk.

  • Importance of Early Detection:
Participants were informed about the early warning signs of cancer and the value of regular screenings such as Pap smears, mammograms, and oral cancer exams. The speakers stressed that early detection significantly improves survival rates and reduces the cost and complexity of treatment.
  • Q&A Interaction:
The session concluded with an open-floor Q&A round, where students and faculty asked insightful questions regarding cancer prevention, genetic risk factors, treatment advances, and the role of diet and immunity. The doctors responded with compassion and expertise, making the session both educational and empowering.
