International Cochlear Awareness Day

Event Date: 09th April 2024

On April 9th, 2024, at 1 pm, NSS Unit-1 at Galgotias University, Greater Noida, celebrated International Cochlear Awareness Day in Lecture Theatre Hall A-207. The event aimed to raise awareness among students about Cochlear implants, which offer significant access to sound for individuals with severe hearing loss. While conventional hearing aids may not fully address moderate to profound hearing impairments, cochlear implants bypass damaged cochlear areas, potentially enhancing speech comprehension, music perception, and environmental sound awareness.

A cochlear implant functions as an electronic hearing device suitable for those with inner-ear damage and insufficient benefit from hearing aids. Unlike hearing aids that amplify sound, a cochlear implant redirects sound signals past damaged areas of the ear to stimulate the auditory nerve. It comprises a sound processor positioned behind the ear, capturing and transmitting sound signals to a receiver implanted beneath the skin. This receiver then relays the signals to electrodes within the cochlea.

International Cochlear Awareness Day was celebrated by NSS Unit-1 at Galgotias University, Greater Noida on 9th April 2024 1pm at Lecture Theatre Hall A-207. International Cochlear Awareness Day is organized to provide the awareness among students about Cochlear implants.

Cochlear implants provide meaningful access to sound for those with more severe hearing loss. Even the most advanced hearing aids may not overcome the hearing difficulties associated with moderate to profound hearing loss. A cochlear implant bypasses the damaged areas of the cochlea and may provide improved hearing abilities for speech understanding and the perception of music and environmental sounds. A cochlear implant is an electronic device that improves hearing. It can be an option for people who have severe hearing loss from inner-ear damage who are not able to hear well with hearing aids. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, a cochlear implant bypasses damaged portions of the ear to deliver sound signals to the hearing (auditory) nerve.

Cochlear implants use a sound processor that fits behind the ear. The processor captures sound signals and sends them to a receiver implanted under the skin behind the ear. The receiver sends the signals to electrodes implanted in the snail-shaped inner ear (cochlea).

Dr. Vineeta Khemchandani , Dean SCAT, Galgotias University, Dr Pushpa Chaudhary, Research Head, SCAT and Mrs. Pranjali Mishra, NSS Coordinator graced the auspicious occasion by their presence.
