CSIR Foundation Day

Event Date: 1 October, 2024

The students of School of Basic Sciences (SBS) visited the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–National Physical Laboratory (CSIR–NPL) on 1st October 2024, on the occasion of CSIR foundation day along with the faculty members Dr. Diwakar Chauhan, Dr. Prabhakar Singh and Dr. Monika Chauhan. This visit helped them to explore the state-of-the-art experimental facilities of the laboratory and various research fields. The students gained knowledge of the caesium atomic clock, different humidity standards, breath alcohol analyser and BNDs, magnetic standards, wind tunnel/gas metrology and LED lighting in accordance with national and international standards.

The learning outcome of the scientific visit are as follows:

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students learned about the multi-stage cascade impactor, which helps them to explain how face masks block particles at different aerodynamic diameters.
  2. Students explored the Cesium Atomic Clock, which is used for measuring time and frequency, helping to maintain Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
  3. Students learned about temperature and humidity meteorology, covering both contact devices like thermometers and thermocouples, and non-contact devices like infrared thermometers that measure temperature without touching the surface.
  4. Students gained knowledge to understand how NMI machines operate during chemical reactions.
  5. Finally, Students learned about two affordable devices: one for measuring weak magnetic fields and a handheld device for measuring low AC magnetic fields.
