Gurukul A Literary Competition Inspired by Timeless Mahabharata

Event brief description

The Literary Society, School of Law organised yet another enthralling activity inspired by the greatest and the most composite Indian epic of all times, the Mahabharata. Titled 'Gurukul', the participants verbally manifested various characters of the classical text such as Duryodhana, Draupadi, Shakuni, Krishna, Bhima, Ghatotkach, Yudhisthir, Karn, Kunti, Sahadev, Arjun, Abhimanyu, Subhadra, Ashwathama, Gandhari, Bhisma, Eklavya etc. A mixed batch of 24 students from GU and Atma Ram Sanadhan College, Miranda House College, SGBT Khalsa College and other colleges of the University of Delhi presented dramatic orations in the event. An interesting aspect of the competition was many cross-gender character declamation that focussed on the main theme of Literary arguments and debates within the timeless epic. Following the first round, the characters of Mahabharata engaged in a verbal duel between characters in the second round, evoking ethical and legal debates within the text. The questions as well as scenarios were presented as challenges to the participants by the judges of the event. Many of the probable questions were prepared by the Literary Society team of the Law School led by Mr. Ayushman Tripathi of BA LLB Third year.

The Literary Society was indebted to Dr.Amrita Tyagi, Department of English, Dr.Namita Gupta, School of Business, Dr.Namita Malik, School of Law and Dr. Sumedha Bhattacharya, SBLS for gracing the occasion of this event and evaluating as well as mentoring our participants. As a token of gratitude, the Faculty Coordinator Dr. Priyam Singh presented a collection of Indian mythological tales to the judges. The event was also emboldened by the kind and encouraging words of many faculty colleagues of the Law School.

The event would not have been possible without the motivation of Professor Dr. Aditya Tomer, Dean, School of Law who carved time for this literary programme and enthused all the participants, members and volunteers alike.

The event Guurkul was a student led endeavour of the Literary Society Student Coordinators -Mr.Shourya Pratap, Mr.Pranay Tripathi, Mr.Vishal Tiwari and Ms.Ana Imtiaz ably supported by their Faculty, Dr. Priyam and Mr. Akshat as well as Mr.Yogesh Vashist. 

The Society is grateful and eager to tread ahead and organize more such events in future.

Event Outcome : The event evoked massive cultural nostalgia and contemporary debates. It also connected all present with the rich epic of Indian culture.
