Workshop on Communication in Autism

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, a highly impactful workshop titled “Communication in Autism” was conducted on April 2, 2025, at the Cornerstone India Foundation, Greater Noida. The event witnessed active participation from students of School of Allied Health Sciences, Galgotias University.
The session was led by Mrs. Manju Singhania, Director and Founder of the Joy of Learning Foundation, Dehradun. A veteran in the field of special education, Mrs. Singhania brought her expertise and compassionate insights into the communication needs of children on the autism spectrum.
The primary objective of the workshop was to equip special educators, parents, and healthcare students with effective, evidence-based strategies to support communication in individuals with autism. The workshop highlighted the importance of structured, consistent communication methods and emphasized understanding the unique sensory and behavioral profiles of autistic individuals.

Understanding Communication Challenges in Autism:
Participants learned about the common barriers autistic individuals face in verbal and non-verbal communication.
Effective Communication Strategies:
Mrs. Singhania introduced various approaches for enhancing engagement, including the use of visual aids, simplified instructions, and behavior-based cues.
PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System):
A detailed session on PECS demonstrated how non-verbal children can use picture cards to express needs, emotions, and preferences.
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication):
The workshop also covered broader AAC tools such as communication boards, apps, and gestures that support expressive and receptive language development.
Interactive Demonstrations and Q&A:
Hands-on demonstrations and a dedicated Q&A session made the learning experience dynamic and applicable.
Students from the Physiotherapy Department of Galgotias University actively participated in the workshop under the guidance of faculty members Dr. Chhavi Sharma . The session provided these budding healthcare professionals with firsthand exposure to therapeutic communication strategies, enhancing their clinical readiness and empathy toward neurodivergent individuals.
