Seminar on Ageing with Dignity

Galgotias University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Bharat, School of Liberal Education, Centre of Excellence in Peace Education & Research under the aegis of National Institute of Social Defence Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Government of India organized a two-day regional seminar on "Ageing with Dignity: The Multidisciplinary Perspectives into the Problems and Prospects of Senior Citizens of India" from March 20-21, 2024. The event aimed to address the challenges faced by the elderly in India from various perspectives.

The seminar witnessed participation from 667 individuals, including academicians, experts, NGO representatives, senior citizens, researchers, policymakers, and students.

Day 1 commenced with a national anthem and lamp lighting followed by an inaugural session, highlighting the significance of the seminar. It included felicitation of elderly members and insightful speeches by dignitaries.

Pre-lunch sessions covered topics such as challenges of aging, financial management, personality assessment, and public policy interventions. Post-lunch sessions focused on facilitating a better quality of life for the elderly and public policy interventions.

Day 1 concluded with a cultural program showcasing India's cultural diversity and heritage.

Day 2 began with registration and networking, accompanied by a creative activity of "Painting in Action." Sessions delved into the heartfulness perspective, economic dependency, peace education, and constitutional safeguards for elders. The day ended with discussions on the road ahead and awarding of certificates.

The seminar provided a platform for comprehensive discussions and insights into ageing issues. Participants left with enriched learnings and a commitment to address the challenges faced by senior citizens in India.

Prof. (Dr.) Anuradha Parasar, the Dean of School of Liberal Education and Centre of Excellence in Peace Education & Research, provided an insightful overview of the seminar's objectives and significance. Distinguished personalities Mr. Suneel Galgotia, Hon’ble Chancellor, Galgotias University has extended his best wishes for the success of the seminar. Mr. Dhruv Galgotia, Hon’ble CEO, Galgotias University, congratulated the Galgotias University - School of Liberal Education and Centre of Excellence in Peace Education & Research for hosting the event. Advocate Aradhana Galgotia, Hon’ble Director Operations, Galgotias University, conveyed her appreciation for the organisation of the regional seminar. Dr. K. Mallikharjuna Babu, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Galgotias University, highlighted the importance of ensuring a life of dignity for the elderly. Prof. (Dr.) Renu Luthra, Advisor to Chancellor, Galgotias University, shared her insights on the issue and felicitated the participating senior citizens. Prof. (Dr.) Avdhesh Kumar, Pro Vice Chancellor, Galgotias University, expressed his good wishes for the smooth conduct of the event. Pre-lunch sessions on Day 1 covered a diverse array of topics, including understanding the sociological challenges of ageing, financial management for seniors, and personality assessment. Renowned resource persons from esteemed institutions shared their expertise and engaged participants in interactive discussions, fostering a dynamic learning environment. Post-lunch sessions focused on facilitating a better quality of life for the elderly and exploring public policy interventions aimed at addressing their needs. The day culminated in a vibrant cultural program celebrating India's cultural diversity and heritage, providing participants with a memorable and enriching experience.

Day 2 commenced with registration and networking activities, providing participants with opportunities to connect and engage with one another. Alongside, a creative session titled "Painting in Action" was conducted, offering participants a therapeutic and rejuvenating experience through artistic expression.

The sessions on Day 2 delved deeper into the multifaceted aspects of ageing, including the heartfulness perspective, economic dependency, peace education, and constitutional safeguards for elders. Noteworthy resource persons shared valuable insights into maintaining holistic health and financial independence during old age. Additionally, sessions on peace education and constitutional safeguards underscored the importance of fostering a culture of respect and dignity for the elderly within society.

The final session, titled "Ageing with Dignity: The Road Ahead," provided a platform for reflections on the seminar's outcomes and encouraged participants to contribute ideas for addressing the challenges faced by senior citizens. Prof. (Dr.) Anuradha Parasar and other dignitaries reiterated the importance of continued efforts towards ensuring a life of dignity for the elderly, emphasizing the need for sustained advocacy and policy interventions.

The two-day regional seminar on "Ageing with Dignity" served as a catalyst for meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and networking among stakeholders committed to the welfare of senior citizens. Participants left the seminar equipped with enriched insights, actionable strategies, and a renewed sense of purpose in advocating for the rights and well-being of the elderly population in India.
