Event Date: – 13-05-2025 to 17-05-2025
Event brief description –
Galgotias School of Nursing, Greater Noida, successfully conducted a comprehensive five-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) titled "Publish, Innovate, Lead: A 5-Day Nursing Research Bootcamp" from 13th to 17th May 2025. This program was carefully curated with the objective of building the research capacity of nursing faculty and advanced students, while also emphasizing evidence-based practice and innovation in nursing education.
The event commenced with a powerful keynote session delivered by Professor Dr. Lekha Bist, who illuminated the audience with her insights on “Global Trends in Nursing Research.” Her presentation focused on the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, and how nursing professionals can play a leading role in research and innovation to enhance patient care. This inaugural address set the tone for the rest of the program, emphasizing the critical importance of scholarly contributions by nursing faculty.
Event Detailed Description-
The FDP saw active participation from 56 attendees, comprising faculty members and VII semester B.Sc. Nursing students. The academic rigor and practical focus of the sessions made the program both enriching and impactful. It featured eight external national speakers, one international expert, and seven internal faculty members, all of whom brought a diverse range of perspectives and expertise to the forum.
Key Themes & Session
Each day of the bootcamp explored a unique dimension of nursing research:
Day 1: The theme was “Introduction to Nursing Research” and the evolving trends both globally and nationally. Emphasis was placed on the need for more nurse-led research and its role in clinical advancements.
On first day of the Faculty Development Program titled “Publish, Innovate, Lead: A 5-Day Nursing Research Bootcamp,”a thought-provoking session was conducted by Dr. Jaeny Camp on the topic “Ethical Challenges in Nursing Studies.” The session focused on the critical ethical dimensions that must be considered while planning, conducting, and disseminating nursing research, especially in clinical and vulnerable settings.
The Ethical Foundation of Nursing Research
Dr. Camp opened the session with a discussion on the foundational ethical principles: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. She explained how these principles guide ethical decision-making in nursing practice and research and must be central to every study design.
Vulnerable Populations and Consent
A significant portion of the session focused on working with vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, terminally ill patients, and those with cognitive impairments. Dr. Camp emphasized the importance of informed consent, explaining that it must be obtained freely, clearly understood by participants, and documented. With her extensive experience in nursing leadership and research advocacy, Dr. Camp provided a deep and practical understanding of ethical principles, challenges encountered in the field, and strategies to ensure integrity and compliance in nursing research.
Day 2(14/05/2025)
This day focused on advanced research methodology and statistical analysis. Participants received hands-on training in software such as NVivo, and which are crucial tools for data handling and qualitative research. The session delievered by theDr. Sunita Srivastava (Reader, ILBS College of Nursing, Delhi) It was highly interactive, allowing participants to apply learned concepts to sample datasets.
Day 3:(15/05/2025)
A highly informative and practical session on the topic “Use of SPSS in Nursing Research” was conducted by Prof. Bharat Pareek, a seasoned academician and research mentor. The session aimed at equipping faculty and senior students with essential statistical analysis skills using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) — one of the most widely used tools in healthcare research.
Session Highlights and Content Overview:
Introduction to SPSS Software
Prof. Pareek began the session by introducing the SPSS interface, explaining its components such as Data View, Variable View, Output Viewer, and Syntax Editor. He contextualized the tool within nursing research, emphasizing its role in quantitative analysis and evidence-based decision-making.
Data Entry and Management
Participants were guided through the process of entering data into SPSS, coding variables, labeling data, and defining missing values. The importance of consistent data entry and error-free variable definitions was emphasized to avoid analysis discrepancies.
Descriptive Statistics
The speaker demonstrated how to calculate measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and variability (standard deviation, range) using SPSS. Attendees practiced these operations using sample datasets relevant to nursing studies.
Inferential Statistics
Prof. Pareek provided hands-on guidance for conducting essential inferential tests including:
- Independent Samples t-test
- Paired Samples t-test
- Chi-Square Test
- ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)
- Pearson Correlation
He explained when and why each test is used, along with how to set appropriate assumptions (e.g., normality, homogeneity of variances).
Interpreting Output Tables
A major focus was on reading and interpreting the SPSS output. Prof. Pareek explained key values such as p-values, confidence intervals, and test statistics. He demonstrated how to write results in APA style for inclusion in thesis reports and journal articles.
Practical Application in Nursing Research
Using sample research scenarios—such as patient satisfaction surveys, intervention studies, and correlation of clinical parameters—he showed how SPSS could help nurses draw statistically valid conclusions.
Common Mistakes and Best Practices
Towards the end of the session, Prof. Pareek highlighted common errors made by novice researchers such as incorrect test selection, neglecting assumptions, and misreporting findings. He encouraged the use of tutorials, syntax logs, and regular peer consultation to improve accuracy.
Implementation
The session was structured to be highly interactive. Participants were provided with laptops pre-installed with SPSS and worked alongside the speaker. Real-time analysis tasks were assigned, and participants received feedback on their results.
An open Q&A session followed, where attendees clarified doubts regarding statistical techniques applicable to their ongoing or upcoming research projects. Prof. Pareek answered queries related to sample size, choosing between parametric and non-parametric tests, and using SPSS for dissertation work.
Acknowledgments
The event concluded with a valedictory session in which all speakers commended the organizing team for executing such a well-structured and meaningful academic initiative. Chief guest Dr. Harinder Jeet Goyal shared words of encouragement and highlighted the need for continued professional development in the nursing domain. The five-day Nursing Research Bootcamp proved to be a pivotal learning experience, significantly benefiting nursing educators and final-year students. The blend of theoretical insights and practical sessions fostered a robust research culture. The event concluded with words of appreciation from the esteemed speakers, who commended the initiative for its scope and execution.
Conclusion and Future Recommendations
The session received highly positive feedback for its clarity, practical relevance, and hands-on approach. Many participants expressed that this was their first experience with SPSS and appreciated the opportunity to work directly with real data under expert guidance. The examples tailored to nursing scenarios enhanced their understanding of statistical applications in clinical and academic settings.
The session on “Use of SPSS in Nursing Research” by Prof. Bharat Pareek was a vital part of the FDP and successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in research methodology. It empowered participants to handle quantitative data effectively and inspired confidence in their ability to conduct statistically sound nursing research.
This session significantly contributed to the overarching goal of the FDP — strengthening the research competencies of nursing educators and students through technology-driven, evidence-based practices.
- Focus shifted to funding and grant writing. Topics included identifying funding agencies, understanding grant requirements, and writing competitive proposals. Participants were introduced to the structure of successful grant applications, and sample proposals were analyzed for critical insight. This session was delievered by Dr. Pratiti Haldar (Nursing Officer at Doon Govt. College & Hospital)
The final day revolved around systematic review and meta-analysis. Sessions included drafting a review protocol in alignment with PRISMA guidelines, along with tools and strategies for conducting high-quality literature reviews. This was followed by a wrap-up session where panelists responded to participant queries and summarized the key takeaways of the week.
