The School of Nursing, Galgotias University organized an insightful Expert Talk on “Psychiatric Emergency” in observance of World Mental Health Day 2025, celebrated globally to raise awareness about mental health issues and mobilize efforts in support of mental well-being. This year’s theme, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” emphasized the crucial need for timely mental health services, especially during crisis situations and large-scale emergencies.
Phase – 2 (Meditation & Quiz Competition)
An engaging and educational event was organized for the B.Sc. Nursing students, focusing on the topics “Psychiatric Emergencies” and “Meditation.” The session was designed to enhance both academic knowledge and emotional well-being among the students.
For the 5th Semester, a Quiz Competition on Psychiatric Emergencies was conducted to assess and reinforce their understanding of critical mental health situations. The quiz included various rounds covering identification, management, and nursing interventions in psychiatric emergencies. The activity encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and quick decision-making among participants. It served as an effective tool to review theoretical concepts in a fun and interactive manner. Simultaneously, for the 1st Semester students, a Meditation Session was organized to introduce them to the importance of mindfulness and stress management in nursing education. The session emphasized techniques to improve focus, emotional balance, and inner peace — essential qualities for future. healthcare professionals.
Overall, the event successfully blended academic enrichment with personal growth. Students actively participated and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn through such innovative methods. The program concluded with positive feedback, highlighting the importance of integrating mental health awareness and self-care practices into nursing education.
Event Detailed Description-
The event was graced by Dr. Subhash Chand Gupta, an eminent psychiatrist and academician from the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Dilshad Garden, New Delhi. Dr. Gupta delivered an expert lecture titled “Understanding Crisis Offering Care”, focusing on the recognition, assessment, and management of psychiatric emergencies. The session took place on 9th and 10th October 2025 at Galgotias University, bringing together nursing students, faculty members, and mental health enthusiasts.
In his address, Dr. Gupta began by defining psychiatric emergencies as acute disturbances in thought, mood, behaviour, or social relationship that require immediate intervention to prevent harm to self or others. He elaborated on common psychiatric emergencies such as suicidal behaviour, acute psychosis, mania, panic attacks, substance intoxication or withdrawal, violent behaviour, and severe depressive episodes. Each condition was discussed with real-world examples, making it easier for students to relate theory to clinical practice. Dr. Gupta highlighted the importance of early identification and rapid response in psychiatric emergencies, stressing that timely intervention can save lives and prevent long-term psychological complications. He discussed the principles of crisis intervention, which include ensuring safety, establishing rapport, assessing the level of risk, providing emotional support, and developing a short-term management plan. The expert talk concluded with an interactive question–answer session where students shared their experiences and doubts related to psychiatric nursing and crisis management. Participants appreciated the session for its practicality and depth, noting that it enhanced their clinical readiness and awareness of real-world challenges in mental health nursing.

The speaker also explained various de-escalation techniques, communication strategies, and ethical considerations that nurses must follow while dealing with mentally distressed patients.
