Area of Interest

·         The rapid development in internet technology and the growing number of users of internet are demanding new services that are based on multimedia applications (video/audio conferencing, video/audio telephony, movie-On-demand, news-on-demand, distance learning, etc.). Multimedia applications are bursty in nature and require real time services from communication network. There are several issues to be resolved in multimedia communications such as, digital representation of media, coding and compression, reliability, storage and retrieval techniques, human computer interaction design, QoS management such as bandwidth, delay and jitter, QoS routing, media synchronization and playout, security, and a real time operating system at the hosts. Looking at the agent technology and its applications in various fields (E-commerce, information retrieval, etc.,) and the advantages such as flexibility, customization, adaptability, we are investigating and exploring the use of static and mobile agents in resolving some of the problems in multimedia communications. The problems that have been tackled using agent technology are network monitoring to aid in network resource management, QoS management at network and application level during dynamic network conditions (bandwidth allocation and management), QoS routing to increase acceptance ratio of applications, streams synchronization and play out and its application in Internet-based education systems and E-commerce. Further we plan to work on adaptive media play out. We are also applying computational intelligence techniques along with agent technology to resolve some of the problems in Mobile Ad hoc Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks such as QoS routing, Power aware routing, multicasting, information fusion, multimedia synchronization and security aspects. Also, agents-based model for grid resource allocation are being designed and tested for both wired and wireless grids. Future plans are there to develop an agent-based middleware for QoS provisioning in wireless networks, agent based QoS in m-commerce, and an agent-based security system for wireless networks.
