A small seminar/ lecture series was organized by the Department of Sociology on the topic "Addressing Social Inequality in India" on 1st April, 2018 in A- 205. The following were the sub themes of the seminar:
- Nexus of Caste and Class in India: Continuity and Change
- Varna, Caste and Class: Some Conceptual Problems
- Gender and Stratification
- The changing nature of working class women in India
- The relationship of class and lifestyle in India
- Forms of social exclusion in India
The program stated with a welcome address by Mrs. Upasana Borthakur. The program was actively co-ordinated by Mrs. Mridusmita Singh. Then honourable Dean Dr Sujaan Singh Negi was invited to deliver his key note address on the topic "Addressing Social Inequality in India". He first explained the topic Social Inequality. Social inequality occurs when resources in a given society are distributed unevenly, typically through norms of allocation, that engender specific patterns along lines of socially defined categories of persons. It is the differentiation preference of access of social goods in the society brought about by power, religion, kinship, prestige, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and class. He talked in length about the different types of inequality existing in Indian society. Last of all Sir focussed on the point that it is not useful to talk only about the social inequality problems but we have to focus on the solutions so that social inequalities disappear. Then Dr A.P Pandey,Program chair of the department of sociology was invited to throw light on the topic of Social Inequality in India. He pointed out towards the nature of social inequalities in Indian society. Social inequalities are structured and deeply rooted in social system and its functioning. We need to understand to address the inequalities correctly .
Then 14 students from different disciplines of SHSS presented paper on various sub themes of social inequality. Dr Shreesh Pathak, Dr Saleem Ahmad from Dept. of political science, Dr Neha Sharma From Department of Psychology and Ms. Vishakah Goyal From dept.of economics contributed to the lecture series and shared their invaluable thoughts. This was followed by a vote of thanks by Dr A.P Pandey, the program chair of the dept. of sociology and the program was concluded by the certificate distribution ceremony to the participants.
