The jail visit was organized in collaboration with the District Legal Service Authority Gautam Budh Nagar and with the approval of the office of the District Judge Gautam Budh Nagar.
The objective of the jail visit was to educate the students about prison administration and also to promote legal awareness amongst the inmates. The event witnessed skits performance and legal awareness speeches by the students. The students were first taken for a round of the jail premises by the Deputy Jailor, who showed the various facilities existing in the jail. The students also had the opportunity to visit cells and barracks where the inmates were kept, they also got the opportunity to interact with the inmates. This was followed by performance by students, and skits were organized to inform the inmates about Plea Bargaining and right to bail u/s 436A Cr.P.C. The students also delivered legal awareness speeches on rights of prisoners and release on parole. Finally, a speech was delivered by School of Law faculty Mr. Utkarsh Yadav who underscored that this program is a small beginning towards the commitment of School of Law Galgotias University in providing free legal aid to prisoners and the law school will coordinate with the Jail authorities in providing access to legal service to the prison inmates. The entire program was very well received by the inmates and the Jailor congratulated the Dean School of Law Dr. Rhishikesh Dave for the efforts of the students.
In the end, on behalf of Galgotias University a memento was presented by the Dean Dr. Rhishikesh Dave to Mr. Mohd. Akram Khan Jailor, District Jail Gautam Budh Nagar.
The Jailor in his interaction with Prof. K K Geetha highlighted that a major cause for crime and repeat crime is the fact that about 70 percent of the prison inmates are illiterate and they keep coming back to the jail. He emphasized that some steps must be taken to educate the inmates and he was hopeful that Galgotias University will take initiative in this direction. Prof Geetha assured him that the Legal Aid Committee with the permission of the authority will provide trained volunteers for promoting literacy amongst prison inmates. The deputy jailor highlighted the fact that many of the prisoners though entitled to be set free from the jail under various provision of law, are not been set free due to unavailability of lawyers to represent them before court. An assurance was given to him that the law school would depute LL.M. students for representing the prisoners before the court.
nitiatives that they had taken and were motivated to come again and do something even more substantial.
The Centre expresses its sincere gratitude for the District Judge Gautam Budh Nagar, Civil Judge Senior Division, Jailor and Deputy Jailor Gautam Budh District Jail, without whose cooperation this event would not have been possible. The Centre is also thankful to the University for providing the logistics for the event.
