School of Law organized a Special Lecture on Role of Criminology in Criminal Justice System
Special Lecture Committee, School of Law, Galgotias University organized its 10th lecture on the theme &ldquoRelevance of Criminology in Criminal Justice Administration in India&rdquo. The guest speaker of the day was Prof (Dr.) SC Raina. Prof (Dr.) SC Raina, Director, KIIT Law School, KIIT University has previously been the Founding Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh, National Law University, and the Former Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He has a vast teaching experience of more than 35 years. He has also been Professor-in-Charge of Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, and University of Delhi twice.
The session started with welcoming Prof. (DR) SC Raina, followed by his speech, wherein, he explained the role of Criminology in criminal justice system, he explained how Criminology is science and by product of Sociology and Psychology and not a criminal law, and as to why a person commits crime. He explained theory of different thinkers and jurists and explained as to how the various judging factors of crime can prove to be wrong in different circumstances. He also emphasized on the reasons for committing a crime, for example, poverty is one of the reason for theft. He explained how a judge does not accept anything which is beyond words of law.
He explained the percentage rate of rape crime wherein, 85% of cases are not reported, 15% are reported and amongst 15% the 10% are committed by the acquaintances of the victims further he explained Bonger&rsquos theory which says that poverty and criminality are related. In the end, he concluded with importance of home criminology in criminal system and he also gave an assertive view on as to how the time has come when magistrate should take in consideration of other factors like sociological, economic factors among others, while deciding the case. He said that also every school of law should have Criminology as an important subject. The speech was followed by question and answer session. Towards the end, Prof. (Dr.) Tabrez Ahemad, PVC and Dean School of Law felicitated our guest with memento and a planter. At the end, Convener of the Special Lecture Committee, Dr. Sandhya Kumari gave him a Vote of Thanks.
The event was successful and informational, students and faculty members with keen interest had an interactive session with Prof. Raina. It was a matter of great pride and honour to have Prof. Dr. Raina amongst us.
