The Centre for Clinical Legal Initiatives, School of Law organized a special awareness lecture on 6.2.2014 and 7.2.2014 on the concept and evolution of legal aid movement in India and the activities of the proposed legal aid clinic. The lectures were delivered by the faculty advisors, Ms.K.K.Geetha and Mr.Utkarsh Yadav. Approximately 130 students attended the programme.
The welcome address was given by Ms.K.K.Geetha. She proposed the establishment of the Legal Aid Committee in the Law School and highlighted the vision and objectives of the proposed Clinic. Dr. Rhishikesh Dave, Dean School of Law, addressed the students about the need to spread legal awareness. In the Special Session Ms.K.K.geetha gave a brief about the Concept and Evolution of Legal Aid Movement in India and the need of the constitution of a Legal Aid Committee in the Law School. She discussed in detail how this committee would be of immense help to the needy, poor and the illiterate, who does not have access to the justice and are unaware of their rights.
Professor Utkarsh Yadav took the stage and informed of the opportunities and options available to the students for being the part of the Legal Aid Committee. Prof. Yadav told the students about the activities that can be pursued by the students under the Legal Aid Initiative. He emphasized that the students getting associated with the Legal Aid Committee shall endeavor to further the ideals of Galgotias School of Law. He assured the students that the faculty will actively engage with the committee and will provide guidance, support and assistance at all times.
The students were apprised about the procedural formalities for the formation of a Legal Aid Committee and other related aspects. The Legal Aid Committee was constituted by an open selection process after receiving nominations from the students.
The students were buoyed with the initiative and were willing to actively participate in the committee. Few students shared their views on the activities that can be taken up by the Legal Aid Committee.
Professor K.K. Geetha then gave the closing remarks and told that further steps shall be taken after the formation of the Committee. The Committee will be preparing the proposals for the programmes to be conducted in the present semester.
